PETALING JAYA: The Center to Combat Corruption & Cronyism (C4) has urged senators to reject the Independent Police Conduct Commission (IPCC) bill.
“In its current state, the bill serves no added value in promoting integrity in improving police accountability,” it said in a statement.
Instead, it said the bill should be referred back to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for further amendments.
Last week, the Dewan Rakyat passed the bill which seeks to establish an independent oversight commission for police conduct
According to the bill, the IPCC will be authorised to handle matters related to complaints and investigations into alleged misconduct. It will also advise the government on matters related to integrity in the police force.
Opposition MPs rejected the bill as it did not give the IPCC investigative powers or provide for the establishment of a disciplinary body.
C4 voiced disappointment in MPs who backed the bill, saying they did not consider the IPCC’s flaws.
“The lack of a specialised body to handle misconduct by police will ultimately breed a culture of corruption within the force.
“Those who voted in favour of the bill have disposed of their duty to put the public’s interests first and have failed to exercise the standards of governance and leadership as expected of an elected representative,” it said.
