290 whistleblowers given protection since 2016, MACC

October 04, 2020 (PN)

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said a total of 290 individuals who provided information relating to corrupt activities since 2016 have been given protection under the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010 (WPA).

For the MACC to obtain adequate information on corrupt activities and the abuse of power, whistleblowers from the public are sorely needed.

The WPA, in turn, ensures that individuals who do blow the whistle on such practices are protected against all threats, including the risk of being fired from their job.
Hence, coordination between the MACC and members of the public in regard to the reporting of corruption, along with the assured protection under the WPA, is needed to build a corruption-free Malaysia.

However, the current legal term for ‘whistleblower’ is still severely restricted by S11 of the WPA, which denies protection for reasons such as the whistleblower’s participation in the improper conduct disclosed.

Experts have identified that the current WPA 2010 is in urgent need of reform so as to increase reporting and public confidence.
